Wild Gabon Adventure

Gabon is a rare and exotic tropical gem with wildlife
rich forests covering nearly 70% of it’s land-mass.
The picturesque Atlantic coastline is predominately
wild and unspoiled, and the inland and coastal waters are teeming with fish, reptiles, and marine mammals.            In 2002,
Gabon made a strong commitment to protecting these incredible natural areas by creating 13 National Parks. This is an
incredible safari for the passionate and adventurous traveler!
Please note that as with any animal-based tourism, we are not able to control the movements of the wildlife, and thus cannot
guarantee that you will see what you came for. On the bright side, if you stay a few days in Langoué Bai, you will likely see
elephants and forest buffalo, and are almost certain to see sitatungas marsh-dwelling antelope), monkeys and many interesting
    birds.

Summary (Anticipated itinerary, actual route may vary).

Day 1   Douala, Cameroon / Port Gentil, Gabon
Upon arrival at the Douala Airport in Cameroon, you will be welcomed and transferred to your flight to Port Gentil, Gabon.
The flight is approximately 1.5 hours, and you will arrive around 7:30 p.m. After clearing customs in Port Gentil, you will be
met and transferred to the Meridien Hotel, or similar, for your overnight.

    Day 2   Evengue Island
After a leisurely breakfast, fly to Omboue and take a 20-minute Gabonese pirogue boat tour down the beautiful Mpivié River to
Evengue Island. Arrive at Evengue Island in time for a late lunch. Evengue Island is the base for a gorilla rehabilitation project
managed by WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society).
The staff will explain the gorilla program and accompany you on a short bush walk that will take you to the gorilla family. The
family group is largely made up of orphaned gorillas, and are currently housed in an enclosure on the island. The resident staff
of researchers are highly knowledgeable on gorilla behavior and will share their knowledge and experience with you. You are
guaranteed to see the gorillas, but you will not see them “in the wild” on this island. Spend the rest of the day exploring the
island or just enjoy the fantastic views.
Overnight at the Evengue Lodge, with five bungalows. All rooms have private bathroom facilities and either overlook the
    lagoon or the jungle. (B,L,D)

Day 3   St. Anne / Loango National Park
Travel to Loango Lodge down the Mpivié River. En route, visit St. Anne, the missionary post and the immense bamboo
forest. The old Church Eiffel was a gift from the first priest mother and designed and built in Paris in the late 1800’s. It was then
shipped, in pieces, to Gabon where it transferred over water and pulled out by elephants. You may also visit the boarding
school, missionary post, and after a short walk through the forest, the incredible bamboo cathedral where in rare occasions
    ceremonies are still being held.
After your visit around St. Anne, continue your trip down the Mpivié River through the dense rain- forest. Search for Hartlaub
duck, African Finfoots, Fishing owls, and many other types of birds, as well as monkeys and crocodiles.
Arrive at the Loango Lodge in time for a late lunch. In the afternoon, visit the reserve by either foot or car, to discover the
beauty of Loango National Park and the diversity of landscapes and animals. In the evening, you may be able to enjoy the
rare opportunity of witnessing a Bwiti ceremony in the small village of Ntchongerove. You will be introduced to some of the
Gabonese traditions where deceased ancestors are consulted by dancing in and with fire and eating eboga. It is truly an
unforgettable evening. Return to the Loango Lodge for your overnight. (B,L,D)
Note: We are unable to absolutely guarantee the Bwiti Ceremony though we will do our best to include it in
your tour. If we are unable to arrange it for this evening, it may be held on another evening.

Day 4 - 5   Akaka Camp (Petit Loango)
After an early breakfast, take a boat ride to Akaka, one of the most remote parts of the national park. Akaka is a tented camp in
the heart of the tropical rain-forest and the large wetlands of Petit Loango National Park. It is truly one of the most impressive
places and the best place to see elephants bathe in the river.
The boat trip will take about three hours, and will lead you over wide lagoons and small rivers where the birds and forest offer
magnificent photo opportunities. On arrival in Akaka, you will have lunch in a small restaurant overlooking the river, followed
by a deep forest walk to discover all the beauty of theforest.
Overnight in the Akaka camp for two nights. There are five tents on sun-decks, and each has its own bathroom and bucket
shower. During the night, the sounds of elephants and other animals will give you a real African experience. (2B,2L,2D)

    Day 6   Loango National Park
Return to the Loango Lodge where you will have a number of different safari possibilities. Travel into the park either by car or
on foot. If you decide to do the hike, you will have a full day walk with a picnic lunch.
If you prefer to travel by car, you will return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you may visit a local village.
Your eco-guides will explain how to survive in the forest and how the local population is living with and in nature. You can
also take a tour around the lagoon. This boat trip is especially fantastic for the incredible sunset. Dinner and overnight at the
    Loango Lodge. (B,L,D)

    Day 7   Pt. St. Catherine
Travel to Pt. St. Catherine, about 30 minutes by boat from Loango Lodge and situated on a perfectly pristine beach. The miles
of virtually uninhabited beaches are perfect for relaxing or taking extended walks, shell collecting, or swimming. Late in the
humpback whale season (June-September), female humpbacks pass close to shore with their newly born calves. Enjoy an
afternoon whale watching cruise (weather and sea conditions permitting). The surrounding coastal forest, fringing lagoon, and
mangrovesshelter abundant bird life and smaller mammals. Enjoy a barbecue dinner on the beach, and overnight at the
Pt. St. Catherine Tented Beach Camp. (B,L,D)

    Day 8   Loango
After breakfast, return to the Loango Lodge to enjoy a final overnight in Loango. There are a number of safari possibilities, or
just relax and enjoy the lodge. (B,L,D)
Note: If you would like to depart on day 8, after returning to Loango Lodge you will be transferred back to the airport for your
flight to Doula and continue home or onward. (B)

    Day 9   Ivindo National Park
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Ivindo National Park and Langoué Bai. On arrival in Ivindo, you will be
picked up by park staff and taken to the WCS Ivindo office where you will have time to rest, have a snack, and prepare for
the rest of the journey. From Ivindo, you will be driven 75 km (about 2 hours) to the end of the road to Langoué. From there, it
is approximately a three hour hike tocamp.
There is a steep hill at the beginning of the path that takes about 30 minutes to climb. From there the path is flat. The heat
combined with the intense high humidity makes the climb at the beginning much more difficult than its equivalent in a cooler
climate, so come prepared for a difficult walk.
All visitors are expected to carry their own baggage. If you would prefer to have porters carry your bags for you, it is a
cost of 75 Euros (approx. $90) per person, roundtrip. We need to book the porters at least three weeks in advance, so please
let us know if you would be interested in this option. Spend your overnight in Ivindo at the research camp, located in a large
rocky clearing near a stream. Living conditions at camp are still very rustic. You will be sleeping in a tent and eating in an
outdoor dining area that is sheltered by a tarp. Baths are taken in the stream, or bucket showers can be taken with warm
water upon request. Electricity is available and video/camera batteries can be charged on site. (B,L,D)

    Day 10 - 12   Langoué Bai
Enjoy three full days visiting the clearing of Langoué Bai to view the many animals moving in and out of the forest. Some of
the wildlife that can be found in the park are; forest elephant, primates (gorilla, chimpanzees, mangabey, colobus, mandrill), a
wide variety of bird-life, buffalo, sitatunga, duikers, bush pig, and giant pangolin. Overnights at the Langoué Bai Research
    Camp. (3B,3L,3D)

p.m. and transfer to the Intercontinental Hotel for your overnight. (B)
