The boat: Le Sourire ( The Smile in English) was the name of a small newspaper written by painter Paul Gauguin while he was living in Tahiti. Le Sourire is a sailing yacht built by the META FRANCE shipyards in 1988 and refurbished in 2000. Her hull is made of Strongall aluminium. She has a lifting keel to enter into shallow anchorage, two powerful engines and a salon with outside viewing to enjoy the beautiful landscape even while staying inside protected from the cold and the wind. Tierra del Fuego - Cape Horn: Fireland is a huge archipelago with thousands of islands at the southern end of the South American continent. Some history: Magellan discovered Fireland in 1520 while looking for a path westward to the route of the spices. Today, the Indians who then inhabited the plains, the forests and the coasts of Fireland have all disappeared, victims of the arrival of the white man: sealers, gold seekers, sheep breeders, missionaries and the first settlers. |
