Eclectic Morocco This special Morocco tour will give you a well-rounded mix of Morocco's highlights. The itinerary is great for those who want to experience as much as they can in an active, yet comfortable cultural adventure. This tour also has some pre-planned trip dates in 2007 & 2008 for those wanting to join a group: Tour: Day 1: Begin Morocco Tour in Fez In Fez, we will be staying in the old medina, which is a World Heritage site and one of the oldest and still thriving medieval cities in the world! At 3 pm, we’ll go shopping for our ingredients at the local souk (market) at 3 pm with Chef Lahcen. Following, he will show you how to make one of the best Moroccan meals you’ll ever taste! Day 2: Fez After waking up in one of our riads in Fez, we will spend the day taking a guided tour with our Moroccan guide, who will show us what this Imperial City has to offer, such as the Kairouine Mosque, spice market, tanneries and leather market, pottery quarter, henna market, woodcrafters, metal workers, and Koranic schools. You'll truly learn about the history of the Fez Medina. Day 3: Ziz Valley In the morning, we will pass through the quaint little town of Ifrane in the heart of the Middle Atlas Mountains surrounded by cedar forests filled with Barbary apes. Following, we'll continue on our way to the Ziz Valley Oasis near Errachidia in the south of Morocco. It will take us about six hours. Tonight is special because we will be staying in a small village that is nestled in this fertile region filled with date palm trees. The region is located near the more well known town of Erfoud. You will be able to meet the families of the area who live and work here. If we are able, we will have a Berber Band Bash with an internationally renowned artist. Day 4: Merzouga & Sahara Desert Camel Trek Today, we'll awake in the Ziz Valley, have breakfast, and be able to hike around with our good friend and Ziz Valley guide, Abdelkarim. In the afternoon, we'll be heading into the Sahara Desert for our camel trek. The drive to the desert is about 2.5 hours. Along the way, we will stop for lunch. Once in Merzouga, we will venture inward atop camels into the Sahara Desert, have dinner amongst the dunes and under the stars, and stay in a Bedouin tent for the night. Day 5: Todra Gorge & Dades Gorge If there are any members in the group who would like to rock climb in the Todra Gorge, we will stop here, get fitted for gear and join our certified climbing guide who will literally show us the ropes! Other members can hike around the area. If members of the group do not want to rock climb, we will head straight to the Dades Gorge, enjoy the spectacular scenery, and take a hike. The rock formations are said to resemble monkey paws. We will be spending the night in the Dades overlooking the valley. Day 6: Ouarzazate / Ait Ben Haddou / Marrakesh This morning we will be driving through Ouarzazate followed by the UNESCO World Heritage site and famous Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, where we can stop for lunch. The drive from Ait Ben Haddou to Marrakesh will take us about 4 hours. We will be staying in the old medina, also a World Heritage Site. Tonight you can go to the lively Jemaa el Fna Square to watch the circus-like performers and sample some tasty delights at different stalls. Day 7: Marrakesh Today, you will have the whole day free in the lively Marrakesh. You might visit the Koubba Baadiyn and the historical Ali ben Youssef Medersa (Koranic school). Feel free to walk through the souk (covered market) and see all the wares you will be able to bargain for once we return to this majestic city. Day 8 & 9: High Atlas Mountains or Essaouira After breakfast, we will leave for Imlil in the High Atlas Mountains, which should take 1.5 to 2 hours. Once in Imlil, we will hike up to Armed. Armed is a Berber village on the side of a mountain overlooking some valleys and a river, and Mount Toubkal can be seen in the distance. For those who want to summit Mount Toubkal our certified Moroccan guide will be hiking 4 to 5 hours with you to the French-run Toubkal Base Camp. You’ll have dinner together at the base camp then head to bed so that you can rise early enough to summit the mountain. Following the early-morning summit to the top of Mount Toubkal (well over 13,000 feet or 4,160 meters), you will eat lunch back at the base camp and hike the High Atlas Mountains back down to Armed. We’ll stay the night in the gite and head out the next morning. For those who do not wish to summit Mt. Toubkal, Fazia, our U.S. tour leader will be staying around the Berber village with you. You are welcome to take an afternoon hike together or simply spend the day sipping mint tea. You will be having meals at a family’s home during your time in the mountains. If no one has signed up to summit Mt. Toubkal, you may wish to head to Essaouira on day 9. Day 10: Essaouira In Essaouira, known as the wind capital of Africa, you will have the chance to either surf, wind surf, or kite surf. If you have never done it before, don’t worry. You will be able to take an afternoon lesson with an expert English-speaking instructor for around US $50, including gear. For those who do not want to surf, you can enjoy a walk along the beach, the ramparts, or stroll through the medina watching the woodcrafters hard at work. Day 11: Marrakesh Today, our last full afternoon will be spent in Marrakesh. You are free to explore on your own or accompany the tour leader. Later this afternoon, we will take a walk to watch the sun set at the Menara Gardens. Day 12: Marrakesh. Depart. |
