Male Different from any other island in the country, Male is a city of high-rise buildings and paved roads. While the government offices are located in one area, the main streets are lined with shops and offices. In the old bazaar area which still houses the country’s hub of wholesale and retail trade, the lanes are so narrow that a single vehicle would find it difficult to navigate through, especially with its throngs of busy people. There are no beaches on Male’; instead seawalls surround all its sides. Even a stroll around it would offer interesting sites and shots for the memories; the fish market and the local market at the northern waterfront, the new harbor in the south-west corner and the 400-year old Friday Mosque, to name a few. A stroll around the residential areas or shopping streets would provide an insight into the life and livelihood of the residents of the capital. Or simply sit down and relax at one of the small parks dotted around the capital and just observe the pace of life. If you prefer, you could make a tour of the capital by taxi. Many taxi centers operate a number of comfortable, well- maintained taxis. The maximum rates that can be charged are set by the government. Summary: This is only an outline showing what is possible. A detailed itinerary will always be supplied after thenecessary e-mail correspondence to establish the Guest's preferences: Maybe, the best option when going to Maldives could be to stay at one of the paradisaical resorts sited on any atoll not too far from Male (let's say at a pleasant speed boat trip of no more than 1 hour) and combine the endless white sand coves and turquoise bays, unspoilt waters and stunning dive spots with the vibrant life, ambiance and energy on the capital, Male. Or have you holidays on board of a luxury live-aboard vessel cruising the archipelago. Many people believe that a cruise is the best way of really appreciating the unique beauty of the Maldives, 99% of which is water. Cruise operators offer you several possibilities. You may choose between a diving safari and a relaxing cruise through the atolls, which lets you be in total harmony with nature as your boat winds its way through the multitude of islands. Luxury Live-Aboard Experience (sample) Our tours generally begin and end in the International Airport on Hulhule' Island barely ten minutes across the channel from Male', the capital. Each tour covers two or three atolls or more depending on the duration. The cruising is done during the daylight hours, passing by palm-fringed islands set over sugar-white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons. Normally the vessel is calmly anchored by sunset, sometimes near an uninhabited island or a deserted sand bank, sometimes near an inhabited island, affording our guests an opportunity to savour the local arts, crafts and singing and dancing called boduberu .
discoveries, offer the best combination of dive sites, given the time of the year. Our tours are mainly of 10 day, 7 day and 5 day duration. For those who prefer 10 days or longer charters, they can combine two consecutive short tours. The tours are designed for whale shark and rich fish-life sightings year-round with schooling mantas thrown in June to October. While we do not guarantee the sightings of the big pelagics, the chance of encountering them is very high, indeed. We also offer a special tour covering the southernmost atolls of Maldives, Huvadhoo and Addu. These remote atolls, little visited by tourists, offer colorful coral reefs. The channels abound with sharks. We recommend tours of minimum 10 days of duration. The best time for a south tour is mid February to mid April. Price includes: • Accommodation aboard on twin or double sharing. • Meals and snacks, tea/coffee/juice, bottled drinking water, wine at dinner. • Three to four dives daily with tank and weights. • Services of a PADI qualified and highly experienced English speaking dive master. • Pickup and drop-off at Male’ Airport on scheduled departure and return dates.
