Ecological Trails of Ghana Our 11 day eco tour of Ghana offers a perfect opportunity to cover all of Ghana's habitats and tribal regions. During our tours we interact with the various ethnic groups which include Ashanti’s, Fanti’s, Ewe’s, Ga’s, Wala’s, Biri’s and Lobi’s, to mention just a few of the 75 different ethnic groups found in current day Ghana. You have the opportunity to view and participate in traditional practices such as African dance, drumming, Kente weaving, cooking and sculpting. We travel to regions seldom visited by tourists, which enhances our guests' experience in seeing the real Ghana. Our focus is on our guests' experiencing the varied traditions, cultures and daily ways of life of the many communities we come into contact with. Our accommodation ranges from hotels, in the towns and cities, to small guest-houses and traditional tribal homesteads, in the more rural areas we visit. Our group sizes are small as we firmly believe low impact touring is the best way of preserving the beautiful places we visit. Tour: Day 1: Arrival: Arrival at Kotoka international airport and transferred to your hotel by the experienced guides who will be with you for the duration of your tour. You will be briefed on all aspects of your holiday over complementary drinks as you acclimatize yourself to Western Africa. Day 2: Cultural excursion: The start to an amazing journey, after breakfast we set off for Kumasi, home of the Asantehene King of the Ashanti’s. En route we will visit a small craft village famous for its wooden carvings, an excellent place to buy and witness skilled carvers outside their workshops. We then proceed to Aburi Botanical Gardens for lunch. After lunch we make our way to a small village that makes traditional Ghanaian glass beads, here we will sit with Comfort and her wonderful family learning the history behind the beads and skilled process of making them. A short distance from the village is the beautiful Boti waterfall, a refreshing place to stop before setting off on the final leg of our journey to Kumasi. Day 3: Community based ecotourism project and wildlife: An early start as we set off for Bonwire, home of Kente. We will interact with the locals learning the history behind the many designs of cloth and witness skilled weavers outside their homes during our village tour. A Coco farm is found a short distance away, Ghana is the worlds 2nd largest producer of Coco and a tour learning the process of producing quality Coco will give us an insight into the daily lives of many locals in Ghana. After lunch we head northwards towards the villages of Boebeng and Fiema, these 2 villages have been protecting black and white Colobus and Mona monkeys that live in the surrounding forests. The locals perceive them to be sacred; we will tour the village interacting with the locals, learning their history and traditions. Day 4: Community based ecotourism project and wildlife: An early start as we set off for the Upper West region of Ghana and the Wechiau community hippo sanctuary. Wechiau was voted the 3rd best eco conservation project in the world by the Independent newspaper in the UK. We enjoy a wonderful day mixing with the local community and seeing the endangered hippos on an unforgettable river safari, definitely a highlight of our trip. Day 5: Community based ecotourism project and wildlife: We enjoy another early morning river safari seeing these magnificent mammals in their natural environment. The afternoon will be spent with the locals from the community around our Lobi compound. In the evening we will relax under the beautiful African night sky listening to traditional Lobi xylophone music. Day 6: Wildlife viewing and cultural excursions: After a morning river safari we head off for Mole National Park, Ghana’s largest and best game viewing park. We set off for an afternoon foot safari getting extremely close to the worlds largest land mammals African Elephants. We marvel at the wildlife as we relax around the pool of our hotel in the evening. Day 7: Cultural excursions: After an early morning foot safari we depart Mole, our destination is Kumasi, en route we will stop at Larabanga and the 14th century mud and stick mosque. We continue our journey taking a refreshing break at the beautiful Kintampo waterfall. Some of our guests use this opportunity to experience the most refreshing shower in Ghana. On our arrival in Kumasi we relax around the pool of our hotel. Day 8: Cultural tour: A morning visit to Kejetia market, which is the largest outdoor market in the whole of Western Africa. A labyrinth of stalls nestled closely together we experience everyday life for the people of this great city; during our time here we can pick up some bargain souvenirs at low prices. After lunch we visit the village of Mosomangar and the exceptional bamboo orchestra. During our time in the village we will interact with the locals learning the history behind the orchestra and experience their daily life. After witnessing an amazing performance and interacting with locals at a nearby spot (bar) we settle down in the local guest house for the evening. Day 9: Wildlife viewing and cultural excursions: The morning starts with a buzz, after bidding farewell to the locals at Mosomangar, we set off for Kakum National Park and Africa’s only canopy walkway. Kakum is a beautiful tropical guinea rainforest and the canopy is an exciting excursion, set 40 meters above the rainforest floor and attached to 7 emerging trees, this is an excursion never forgotten. Day 10: Cultural excursions, ecotourism project and wildlife: A relaxing morning and leisurely breakfast, after recharging our batteries, we visit Cape Coast castle a UNESCO world heritage site and the castle of St George, the oldest extant Colonial building in sub Saharan Africa, for an emotional journey through Ghana’s recent tragic enslaved African trade era. Day 11: Accra tour: Your final day with us in Ghana, after a leisurely breakfast we set off for Accra, on our arrival we visit the National Museum, a wonderful place where almost all the displays are ethnographic in nature. We enjoy an early evening meal before your departure after a wonderful 11 day tour. |
