Scuba Diving The Red Sea’s narrow, elongated shape and its incredible depth (9,350 ft) have led to an unequalled species diversity. Extremely crystal clear warm waters and, miles of spectacular fringing coral reefs, internal lagoons and navigable channels provide incredibly diverse habitats for over 1000 species of fish, almost 20% of which are totally unique. Spectacular coral reefs, dizzyingly sheer drop-offs, underwater caverns and overhangs qualify Egypt as a world class dive site for divers of all levels. In fact within this relatively small area is found nearly everything that an aspiring diver would have on his checklist of things to see. Stunning wall diving, a huge variety of fish and corals, and some of the best wrecks on the planet. Water temperatures range between 29 degrees (84 F) in the summer to the lower twenties (70s F) in winter. While habitual cold water divers may be content with a lycra suit or shortie wet-suit, locals wear full suits even in summer, and opt for 7mm (0.28in) suits with hoods or even dry-suits in the winter months. Prevailing winds largely determine dive conditions here, especially as much diving is done from shore or long-range boat, where sheltered access or anchorage is vital. Wind-driven waves, particularly in the autumn and winter, can limit access to some sites, and divers would be well advised to practice entries through heavy surf. Visibility is generally very good, with averages over 20m (65 ft), and highs far beyond that. As with any tropical sea, however, seasonal fluctuations can bring seriously reduced visibility in the form of plankton blooms or other natural phenomenal Many areas to choose: North Sinai where you will find some of the least spoiled reefs on the Egyptian coastline, with none of the hustle and bustle of the more developed diving areas to the south. Luxuriant coral gardens and sheer offshore canyons attract a dense population of reef fauna, and the clear waters bring crystal visibility to add to your diving pleasure. South Sinai, best known for its pristine walls of exquisite hard corals, South Sinai offers an equal wealth of soft corals among its hugely varied repertoire of reefs. With reef profiles ranging from sheer, undercut cliffs to gently undulating coral fields, the area is a living encyclopedia of tropical corals. Sharm El Sheikh to Hurghada; One of the real highlights of diving in this region are the well-preserved, accessible shipwrecks that litter the seabed across the entrance to the Gulf of Suez. At least six major wrecks lie in easy reach of Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada. There are 19th century mail steamers, modern cargo ships and historic spice traders lying on the bottom of this stretch of sea, all waiting to be explored. South Egypt Where Diving is always fantastic. Stick a pin in the map almost anywhere on the coast, and you would most likely find prime dive site of pristine beauty. This is an area of elaborate coral gardens, maze-like labyrinths of caves and canyons, drop-offs and gentle slopes, shallow undersea playgrounds and submarine valleys. And also offshore and the Deep South or off the Sudan or Yemen coasts or off the Jordanian Coast. Advise: Most of the diving in the Red Sea area is done with a shore-based, day boat dive operation or a liveaboard dive boat. The currents in these areas vary from no current to very strong, so it is strongly advised to dive or snorkel with guides or with experienced divers who have dove in the area before and are familiar with the conditions. |
